BREAKING: Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood has just been awarded the prestigious 2025 Leadership Award by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA). The announcement was made during the MSFCA’s annual conference, taking place from October 15-18, 2025, in Duluth.
This honor recognizes individuals who have significantly advanced the fire service, and Sherwood’s leadership qualities have set a remarkable precedent. Under his stewardship since 2021, the Bemidji Fire Department has seen enhanced capacity, morale, and operational readiness. The MSFCA highlighted his commitment to accountability, continuous improvement, and community partnerships as pillars of his leadership style.
During the award ceremony, MSFCA President Eric Bullen praised Sherwood’s unwavering advocacy for fire services at both state and national levels. Earlier this year, Sherwood secured a scholarship to attend the Congressional Fire Services Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C., showcasing his dedication to expanding his knowledge and influence in the field.
“Chief Sherwood seamlessly integrated with our legislative committee, advocating with broad knowledge for greater Minnesota,” Bullen stated, emphasizing Sherwood’s active role in addressing critical issues facing fire services.
Additionally, Bullen commended Sherwood’s exceptional crisis management during the severe storm that struck on June 21. After the storm, Sherwood led his department in handling an overwhelming surge in emergency calls and swiftly activated the Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan. This initiative enabled fire resources from across the state to assist, allowing his team time to address their own personal challenges in the storm’s aftermath.
The recognition from the MSFCA underscores the profound impact of Sherwood’s leadership on the entire Bemidji community. The Bemidji Fire Department expressed pride in having such an exceptional leader, stating,
“When our chief leads well, our entire community benefits.”
As Chief Sherwood continues to pave the way for improved fire service standards, the community awaits further developments on initiatives that will enhance safety and effectiveness in the region. This award is not just a personal achievement; it reflects the collective efforts of the Bemidji Fire Department to serve and protect their community.
Stay tuned for updates on Chief Sherwood’s upcoming projects and initiatives aimed at further advancing the fire service in Minnesota.
