The Rambler Food Truck Closes After 12 Years of Service

UPDATE: The beloved food truck, The Rambler, has officially closed its doors for good after its last day of service on Thursday, October 30, 2023. This marks the end of an era for Twin Ports food lovers who have enjoyed its unique offerings, including mahi mahi tacos and bacon-wrapped slaw dogs, since its inception in 2012.

A farewell event was held at The Tasting Room, located at 313 N. Central Ave., Duluth, to commemorate The Rambler’s legacy. Owner Jonathan Reznick referred to the truck as “his baby,” highlighting the emotional connection many have to this mobile culinary staple.

The decision to retire The Rambler comes as Midcoast Catering, established in 2017, has become the primary focus of the business, accounting for approximately 70% of sales. With The Rambler contributing only about 15% and The Tasting Room at 10%, Auran confirmed that the shift will allow the company to concentrate more on special events and corporate catering.

Reflecting on the vibrant food truck scene, Auran noted, “It’s wonderful to see what else has evolved in Duluth. We feel it’s in good hands.” She emphasized the challenges of operating a food truck, including the labor-intensive nature of the business and mechanical issues.

Throughout its run, The Rambler was a fixture at major events, serving hungry crowds at places like Bayfront Festival Park and corporate locations such as Cirrus. Auran recalls one of her most memorable experiences with The Rambler during a Trampled By Turtles concert in 2018, stating, “It was very hot and tiring, but just being able to get through it, and looking back and being like, ‘We did that!’ It’s a great memory.”

Going forward, Midcoast Catering will capitalize on its existing partnerships and explore new opportunities in corporate catering. Auran reassured staff about job security, explaining, “All of our staff is pretty much cross-trained between the truck, catering, and bartending. There’s not going to be a shortage of hours for anybody.”

As the fate of The Rambler food truck remains uncertain—whether it will be sold or kept for future use—this farewell marks a significant moment in Duluth’s culinary landscape. The community is left to cherish the memories and flavors brought by The Rambler over its impressive 12-year run.

With winter approaching, Midcoast Catering plans to shift its focus to hosting private and public tasting events, including exciting wine and beer pairings. “Nothing is too silly or too goofy. We’re happy to make it happen,” Auran said, inviting the community to continue the celebration of food and flavors in new and creative ways.

Stay tuned for updates as Midcoast Catering unveils its plans for the future, ensuring that the essence of The Rambler lives on in Duluth.
