Shenandoah County Library Expands Community Engagement with Events

The Shenandoah County Library is enhancing its community outreach efforts by introducing a range of events aimed at fostering connections among residents. Under the guidance of the new outreach services coordinator, Morgan Strassner, the library seeks to demonstrate that a library card offers access to more than just books.

Strassner emphasized the library’s role as a community hub, stating, “We’re trying to tell the community that the library can be so much more for you than a place where you can get books.” She noted that many residents express a lack of interest in reading, which has inspired her to promote alternative forms of engagement, such as audiobooks. “I don’t really read either. I listen to audiobooks, which is still reading,” she added.

Recognizing the library as a unique space for connection, Strassner pointed out that it is one of the few remaining free venues where individuals can gather without the pressure of spending money. She aims to eliminate financial barriers that might prevent community members from participating in enriching activities.

In her role, Strassner has already initiated several events to bring people together around common interests. The inaugural event was a Taylor Swift launch party in mid-October, where attendees listened to the artist’s new album while creating friendship bracelets. “We had all ages,” she remarked. The event not only facilitated creativity but also fostered friendships, aligning with the library’s mission to strengthen community ties.

Strassner explained the dual focus of her outreach role: spreading awareness of library offerings and actively engaging with the community. “You have to put the word out. But you also have to be out in the community and make connections,” she said.

Feedback from attendees is crucial to Strassner, who considers the success of an event not solely based on attendance numbers but on the positive responses from participants. “Even if it’s just five people, getting feedback that they enjoyed it and have additional ideas is a success,” she noted, highlighting the importance of ongoing community dialogue.

Eager to expand her outreach, Strassner encourages residents of Shenandoah County to share their needs and suggestions. “We want to hear from you,” she stressed, inviting input on potential book purchases or event ideas. Residents can reach her via email at [email protected] or by calling 540-984-8200.

To maintain momentum, Strassner has outlined a series of events for November that promise to engage the community further.
