Joseph Sikora Discusses Tensions in “Reasonable Doubt” Episode 9

Joseph Sikora, known for his role as Bill Sterling in the legal drama “Reasonable Doubt,” recently shared insights about the complex dynamics between his character and Jax Stewart, portrayed by Emayatzy Corinealdi. In the latest episode, Season 3, Episode 9, tensions between the two characters escalate dramatically, revealing deep-seated conflicts and ambitions.

Sikora described Bill’s relationship with Jax as grounded in “true respect,” despite his underhanded attempts to secure a partnership at the law firm. “I think that Bill is a complex character in the way that he sees Jax for who she is … she is exceptional,” Sikora explained in an interview with TheWrap. He emphasized that Bill recognizes Jax’s talents, stating, “Hey, look, all of these things I can learn from Jax.”

While acknowledging Jax’s prowess as an attorney, likening her to the “Michael Jordan” of her field, Sikora pointed out that even top performers can benefit from coaching. He remarked, “It’s short-sighted to think that you can’t learn something from other people.” According to Sikora, this acknowledgment highlights one of Jax’s flaws, which audiences have come to recognize, adding layers to her character as a high-achieving attorney.

The introduction of a new attorney, along with former coastguardsman Bill’s increasing ambition, adds to the drama. Initially, Jax took Bill on as co-counsel to gain experience in criminal litigation. However, professional boundaries began to blur as Bill pursued both personal and professional gains, including a romantic involvement with Jax’s best friend, Nefetari Spencer, who plays Sally.

As the episode unfolds, Bill’s ambition leads to a fallout with Jax. Their professional relationship deteriorates as Bill challenges Jax’s decisions regarding a case, leading to a heated confrontation. The pivotal moment occurs when Jax confronts Bill about his hidden motives, stating, “So the plan is that I win and you get promoted. What do I get?” She exposed his actions, highlighting the contradictions in his quest for partnership.

Bill’s response reflects his frustration with Jax’s leadership style, accusing her of wanting “a lackey to hang on to your every word.” This exchange underscores the growing animosity between the two characters, which is intensified by Bill’s personal struggles, including his ongoing divorce.

By the episode’s conclusion, Bill attempts to secure his future at the firm by working with fellow partners to undermine Jax’s position. Sikora noted that while Bill expresses respect for Jax, he also feels the need to prove himself, saying, “I’m going to show you how great I am, because I’m going to do the closing argument and watch me kill it.” Jax, however, quickly thwarts his plans, asserting her authority and expertise.

Sikora concluded with a poignant reflection on Bill’s character, noting the duality of his respect for Jax and his own ambition. “To get to places, you have to have that belief in yourself,” he stated, acknowledging that while Bill seeks validation, there remains a foundational respect for Jax’s capabilities.
