URGENT UPDATE: Boston Police have seized over two kilograms of fentanyl and arrested five suspects during a significant operation in the Southwest Corridor area. The operation, launched in response to community complaints about rampant drug activity, underscores the ongoing battle against the opioid crisis in the city.
Just announced on October 14, 2023, the police operation involved collaboration among multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Youth Violence Strike Force and Massachusetts State Police. Officers executed search warrants at several locations, including 176 Stratton St. in Dorchester and 127 Hazelton St. in Mattapan.
Authorities reported that the operation resulted in the seizure of not only more than 2 kilograms of fentanyl but also 32 rounds of ammunition, digital scales, drug packaging materials, and over $3,000 in cash. This coordinated effort highlights the ongoing issues that have arisen since the closure of the tent-city at Mass and Cass, which had been a hotspot for open-air drug markets.
Those arrested include Ricky Wilson Soto-Arias, 36, and Doris Baez, 37, both from Dorchester and Mattapan respectively. They face charges of trafficking Class A drugs, with additional charges for unlawful possession of ammunition. Other suspects include Bryan Mejia, 31, Jeil Hernandez, 44, and Stephen Smith, 37, all of Boston. Smith is also facing charges related to breaking and entering and larceny.
This operation comes as Boston continues to grapple with the devastating impact of the opioid crisis. The community has reported an uptick in drug-related activities, particularly in areas affected by the closure of Mass and Cass.
Developing: Authorities emphasize that this operation is part of a broader strategy to combat drug trafficking and protect public safety. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activities to local law enforcement as the city works to reclaim its neighborhoods from the grip of drug-related violence.
