URGENT UPDATE: A Freeze Warning is now in effect for nearly all of North Texas, set to begin at 9 p.m. Sunday and lasting until 9 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service has elevated the previously issued Freeze Watch to a formal warning due to the arrival of modified Arctic air.
Residents are being urged to take immediate precautions as temperatures are expected to plummet. While no precipitation is anticipated, the chilling winds and frigid temperatures pose potential risks. It’s critical to protect vulnerable plants, bring pets indoors, and dress in multiple layers if you must venture out during this cold snap.
Strong Winds and Bitter Cold
The region is bracing for strong northerly winds that will contribute to a sharp drop in temperatures. Sustained winds are projected to range from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts potentially reaching up to 35 mph this evening. Today’s high is expected to hover just below 60 degrees, but the wind chill will make it feel significantly cooler throughout the afternoon.
Overnight lows in the Metroplex are forecasted to dip near or just below the freezing mark of 32 degrees. Outlying areas, including Denton and Collin Counties, could experience even colder temperatures, falling into the upper 20s. The intense winds will persist through Monday morning, causing “feel like” temperatures to drop into the upper 20s and low 30s, with some areas feeling as cold as the mid-20s.
Brief Chill with a Quick Warm-Up Ahead
Fortunately, this cold spell is expected to be short-lived. High pressure moving in from the west will shift winds to a southerly direction by Tuesday, leading to a significant warming trend. Highs are anticipated to rebound into the mid to upper 70s, even reaching the low 80s by late this week into the weekend.
A possible return of rain is also on the horizon, with a low chance of showers and thunderstorms predicted for next weekend.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports and prepare accordingly as this weather system unfolds. Stay safe, North Texas!
