Gerhart Klein, now 92 years old, and his wife, Brigitte, co-founders of Brigger by Klein Design, have built a company focused on producing “formed for function” furniture that blends comfort and style.
In the mid-1970s, Gerhart Klein began crafting furniture out of necessity when he was unable to find a chair that met his standards in local stores. His passion led him to create a range of products that reflect Scandinavian-inspired design principles, using locally sourced wood and fabric. By the mid-1980s, he transitioned to a dedicated manufacturing facility, marking a significant step in his entrepreneurial journey.
Klein’s background as a chemical engineer played a role in his success. He worked at a company that eventually became Duracell, where he developed skills that would later inform his business practices. In 1985, he made the decision to leave corporate life behind and focus entirely on his furniture business, which he describes as an “interesting challenge” and the perfect retirement job.
Brigitte Klein, who has been by Gerhart’s side for over 62 years, is instrumental to their success. The company name, Brigger, is a combination of their names, symbolizing their partnership both in life and business. As Gerhart noted, “She’s quality control,” highlighting her vital role in improving their products and ensuring customer satisfaction.
The couple’s commitment to their craft remains strong, with recent efforts to enhance their online presence through a website relaunch. Most of their sales now occur online, reflecting a shift in consumer behavior and the importance of e-commerce in the current market.
