The Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver is currently facing a serious investigation following allegations of voyeurism involving one of its employees. The theatre company confirmed that a male employee was suspended on August 29, 2023, after being accused of secretly filming cast members in a private changing room at the Stanley Theatre. The Vancouver Police Department’s Sex Crimes Unit initiated the investigation, leading to the employee’s arrest shortly after the allegations surfaced.
According to VPD Constable Tania Visintin, the 33-year-old employee was taken into custody on the same day the investigation began. Although charges have not yet been filed, he has since been released from custody while the inquiry continues. Protective conditions have been established, preventing the suspect from contacting the alleged victims or anyone associated with the Arts Club Theatre.
In response to the allegations, Peter Cathie-White, Executive Director of the Arts Club Theatre, expressed deep concern in a statement. He emphasized that the organization does not condone such behavior and prioritizes the safety and well-being of its employees and freelance artists. “We are aware of an ongoing police investigation into serious allegations against an employee of our organization. The alleged actions, if true, are deeply troubling and run counter to everything that we stand for,” Cathie-White stated.
Support services have been put in place for those affected by the situation. The Arts Club Theatre is committed to providing resources to assist individuals during this distressing time. “Support services have been established for those affected, and resources are available to ensure that individuals receive the assistance they need,” Cathie-White added.
As the investigation unfolds, the Arts Club Theatre has refrained from providing further details, choosing to respect the ongoing police process. The theatre remains focused on ensuring that its environment remains safe and supportive for all artists and staff involved.
The community is closely monitoring the situation, as it highlights the pressing issues surrounding workplace safety and accountability in the arts industry. Further developments are anticipated as the Vancouver Police Department continues its investigation.
