Habitat for Humanity Honors Carters at Urgent Ayer Rally

UPDATE: Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts (NCM) held a powerful rally in Ayer to honor President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter during the 39th annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. This significant event, the first since President Carter’s passing, drew thousands of volunteers nationwide to advance the critical mission of affordable homeownership.

The rally took place last week, culminating in a heartfelt lunch celebration at the construction site in Ayer. Attendees included students, local volunteers, community leaders, and representatives from the state, all gathered to pay tribute to the Carters’ unwavering dedication to Habitat for Humanity’s cause.

Speaking at the event, Habitat for Humanity NCM Executive Director Carolyn Read expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “Today, we come together to honor President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, two remarkable individuals whose lives have embodied the very mission of Habitat for Humanity — building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.”

Read emphasized the Carters’ hands-on involvement, saying they worked side by side with Habitat volunteers for over four decades, demonstrating what it means to serve with humility and compassion. “Their legacy continues in every wall we raise and every family we help move into a safe, affordable home,” she added.

The Carters launched the first Work Project in 1984, transforming a six-story building in New York City into affordable housing. In honor of their impact, East 6th Street in New York was recently renamed Jimmy Carter Way. This enduring legacy is reflected in the ongoing efforts of Habitat for Humanity NCM, which continues to build homes for families in need.

As part of the rally, volunteers signed a door that will be incorporated into one of the new homes, symbolizing hope and community spirit. Habitat for Humanity NCM not only builds homes but also fosters a supportive environment where families can thrive.

In addition to the rally, Habitat NCM operates the Leominster ReStore, which raises funds to support affordable housing initiatives. The ReStore is set to relocate to a new location at 650 North Main St. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for December 11. The current location at 637 Lancaster St. will remain open through the end of November.

This rally serves as a reminder of the power of community action and the impact of dedicated service. With the holiday season approaching, families will soon have a stable place to call home, honoring the Carters’ legacy in a profound way.

Habitat for Humanity NCM continues to urge community members to get involved, stating that every effort made contributes to building homes and empowering families. The Carters’ commitment to affordable housing inspires everyone to take action and make a difference.
