URGENT UPDATE: Chester officials have just unveiled a statue honoring local hero Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs, marking a historic celebration for the community. On November 6, 2023, the statue was revealed in the park across from Chester City Hall at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States, commemorating Gibbs as the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title.
Mayor Stefan Roots declared the unveiling a pivotal moment, stating, “Her story has inspired the world with her kickboxing world championship. Fredia is known as ‘The Most Dangerous Woman in the World.’” Gibbs, who enjoyed a professional martial arts career spanning three decades, holds multiple titles including ISKA, WKA, and WCK world championships.
The statue symbolizes more than just her accomplishments; it represents the spirit of Chester itself. Mayor Roots emphasized, “This statue stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone who walks past it. It tells them no goal is too big.” He noted that Gibbs continues to break barriers and inspire women everywhere.
Previously, the statue was unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022, where Gibbs excelled as an All-American basketball player. Following the university’s closure, the statue was transferred to Villanova University and later gifted to Chester, a testament to her lasting legacy in the community.
Gibbs expressed deep gratitude during the unveiling, stating, “Wow, what a moment. To stand here today, back here where it all began right here in Chester, it means everything to me.” She highlighted the importance of her hometown in shaping her journey, adding, “This statue doesn’t just represent me, it represents us, it represents Chester, the heart, the fight, the resilience.”
Holding back tears, she reflected, “Chester is my story… Thank you, Chester, I love you.” The statue, sculpted by Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze, serves as a powerful reminder of determination and community support.
As Chester celebrates this monumental achievement, residents are encouraged to visit the statue and reflect on its significance. The unveiling marks not just a tribute to a champion, but a call to all to pursue their dreams with grit and passion.
