J.J. Barea’s unexpected coaching journey began in the summer of 2017 when he was offered the chance to lead his hometown team, the Indios de Mayagüez, in Puerto Rico. The former NBA guard attended a local game during his offseason, reflecting on his deep connection to the island’s basketball culture. At that time, the team was struggling and had recently fired their coach. Recognized as the most notable basketball figure in attendance, Barea was approached by the team owner with a surprising proposition: “Hey, do you want to coach?”
Initially taken aback, Barea expressed his uncertainty about whether he could take on this role. After consulting with Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson of the Dallas Mavericks, he received the green light to coach in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) league. Without hesitation, he accepted the position, marking the start of his coaching career in the very place that shaped him.
From Player to Coach: Building Relationships
Fast forward to today, Barea stands on the bench as an assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets under head coach David Adelman. His coaching role is primarily focused on offensive strategy, but his vibrant personality and ability to connect with players have made him a valuable asset to the team. Barea’s basketball journey began in Puerto Rico, where he played for the Cangrejeros de Santurce before making his way to the NBA as an undrafted free agent. He gained recognition during the 2011 NBA Finals, contributing significantly to Dallas’s championship win and becoming only the second Puerto Rican to achieve this feat. As Barea steps into his role with the Nuggets, he aims to leverage his experiences alongside some of the best in the sport. He emphasizes the significance of assisting star player Nikola Jokic by sharing insights from his time playing with Dirk Nowitzki, focusing on effective spacing and offensive strategies. This facility, which was formerly an abandoned school, will feature multiple basketball courts and a soccer field, serving as a future training hub for the Puerto Rican national team. His dream is for the Nuggets or Mavericks to hold a training camp in Puerto Rico, further connecting his professional journey with his roots.
Barea’s commitment to representing Puerto Rico in the basketball world remains unwavering. He recalls fondly his years playing for the national team, stating, “Traveling the whole world playing for Puerto Rico for me is like the coolest thing you can do.” His desire to coach the national team someday is a testament to his dedication to his heritage and the sport.
