UPDATE: Santa Clarita residents are rallying against a proposed eight-story courthouse, with urgent voices rising at a public meeting held on November 12, 2023. The Judicial Council unveiled plans for the courthouse to be situated at the bustling intersection of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, directly across from the local mall.
This ambitious project aims to consolidate juvenile criminal cases from the entire San Fernando Valley and manage felony arraignments and trials from outside the Santa Clarita area. It also proposes additional courtrooms for civil and family law cases. However, prominent community member Denise Lite has made it clear that she is staunchly opposed to the courthouse’s location, stating it would disrupt the city’s balance and safety.
Lite expressed her concerns about the proposed courthouse’s potential to increase criminal activity, traffic congestion, and security issues in a town that prides itself on its small-town atmosphere. She highlighted the alarming proximity of the proposed site to residential neighborhoods, including The Summit, The Bungalows, and Old Orchard, as well as local institutions like College of the Canyons and the California Institute of the Arts.
“The introduction of a large-scale courthouse, similar to the notorious Van Nuys Courthouse, would fundamentally alter the quality of life here,” Lite warned. “It would make emergency access to hospitals more difficult and raise concerns about the safety of our families.”
Residents are urged to voice their opinions on this critical issue. Public comments can be submitted to Kim Bobic at [email protected] by November 26, 2023. Lite emphasized that silence could be interpreted as acceptance of the proposal, urging community members to advocate for thoughtful development that reflects their values.
“This is exactly the type of project I would oppose as a member of the Santa Clarita City Council,” Lite stated. “I believe in protecting our safety, community character, and quality of life.”
As the debate intensifies, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged. This proposed courthouse project is not just about building infrastructure; it’s about preserving the essence of Santa Clarita. With the deadline for public comments fast approaching, community action is crucial.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as residents continue to fight for their city’s future.
