Ron Nirenberg Launches Campaign for Bexar County Judge

Former San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has officially announced his candidacy for the role of Bexar County judge. During a campaign event held on October 21, 2023, at Backyard on Broadway, Nirenberg articulated his vision for the county and outlined the challenges he aims to address.

“I left the mayor’s office clear-eyed about the challenges we’re facing and certain about what it takes to solve them,” Nirenberg stated. He introduced himself to voters by saying, “My name is Ron Nirenberg, and I am running for Bexar County judge.” His announcement was met with enthusiastic support from several key figures, including his campaign treasurer Jorge Herrera, District 2 councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, and former Bexar County judge Nelson Wolff.

During the event, speakers highlighted Nirenberg’s tenure as mayor from 2017 to 2025, emphasizing his accomplishments and his forward-looking vision for Bexar County. Nirenberg remarked, “This race is about the future of Bexar County and determining what kind of shared future we want to build together.”

As part of his preparations, Nirenberg submitted his Appointment of Campaign Treasurer form earlier in the week, a key administrative step toward officially entering the race. “We are the results of our actions, not our ambitions,” he noted. “I’m running to do things, I’m running to change things. I’m running to lead when we need it the most.”

Nirenberg expressed his commitment to earning voters’ trust over the coming months. “I’m excited to earn your vote, and with your help, we will fulfill the potential of a community on the rise,” he added. “And so let’s rise up together, Bexar County. It’s time to get to work.”

Current Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, who has held the position since 2023, has already announced his intention to seek re-election in the upcoming November 2026 election. This sets the stage for a potential contest between Nirenberg and Sakai, marking an important political moment for the county.

Nirenberg’s bid for the judgeship is significant, reflecting his continued commitment to public service and civic leadership in Bexar County. As the election approaches, his supporters are eager to see how his campaign evolves and what impact it may have on local governance.
