UPDATE: Volkswagen’s highly anticipated new T-Roc R is set to launch this month, marking a significant moment for the automaker as the compact crossover continues to dominate the market. With 170,931 units sold through October, the T-Roc ranks as Europe’s fourth best-selling model of the year, according to sales data from Dataforce.
Deliveries of the standard T-Roc begin immediately, but car enthusiasts are already buzzing about the performance-oriented R version, expected to hit the roads by 2027. The T-Roc R remains shrouded in mystery, covered in camouflage, yet clear indicators hint at its high-performance capabilities. The distinctive Akrapovič quad-exhaust system and 20-inch forged wheels suggest this SUV is built for power and grip, with wider tires than its predecessors.
Under the hood, the T-Roc R will feature a familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine shared with the latest Golf R, delivering 328 hp and 295 lb-ft (or 420 Newton-meters) of torque. However, in a notable shift towards sustainability, this new model will incorporate a mild-hybrid system to enhance efficiency while adhering to the upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations. While power levels are unlikely to exceed those of the Golf R, the hybrid setup aims to provide a temporary power boost through its 48-volt system.
Notably, Volkswagen has not confirmed whether the Golf R will transition to a similar mild-hybrid engine, raising questions about the future of performance vehicles in the lineup. The current Golf is expected to remain in production until 2035, with speculation surrounding the need for electrification to meet stricter emissions rules. However, enthusiasts will be disappointed to learn that the six-speed manual gearbox will not be returning; the T-Roc R will utilize a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and feature 4Motion all-wheel drive exclusively.
While the T-Roc R will not be available in the U.S. market, Volkswagen is also preparing to phase out the Touareg R, with production set to end in 2026. As the automotive landscape shifts toward electrification, Volkswagen is already hinting at a future fully electric R model. Following the preview of a combustion-free Polo GTI, the R division’s next steps will likely include an electric powerhouse.
As the automotive industry evolves, Volkswagen continues to innovate while balancing performance and sustainability. Keep an eye on developments surrounding the T-Roc R and other upcoming models as they shape the future of driving.
