Ukraine has announced plans to purchase “up to 100” French-made Rafale fighter jets, alongside anti-air defenses and drones, following a visit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Paris. The Elysee Palace confirmed the deal on Monday, March 4, 2024, during Zelensky’s ninth visit to France since the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022.
At the Villacoublay Air Force Base, southwest of Paris, President Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron signed a letter of intent regarding the military procurement. While the specific terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the announcement marks a significant step in strengthening military ties between Ukraine and France.
The signing ceremony, which took place in front of a Rafale jet armed with guided AASM bombs and a SCALP cruise missile previously supplied to Ukraine, showcased the deepening military cooperation. The leaders were accompanied by a SAMP/T missile interceptor system and a GF300 radar system, both of which have been delivered to Kyiv as part of France’s ongoing support.
The Rafale jets are advanced multi-role fourth-generation fighter aircraft, comparable to the American F-16. These jets are designed to perform both long-range bombing and air-to-air combat missions, enhancing Ukraine’s military capabilities during a time of heightened conflict. France has previously supplied Mirage jets to Ukraine, which serve as a crucial part of its aerial defense.
