Eric Swalwell Launches California Gubernatorial Campaign on Kimmel

Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democratic congressman and vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, officially announced his candidacy for governor of California during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on March 15, 2024. Swalwell emphasized the need for “a fighter and a protector” to address rising living costs and improve wages in the state.

In his announcement, Swalwell stated, “Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector, someone who will bring prices down, lift wages up.” He drew upon his political experience, mentioning his previous roles as a city council member in Dublin, California, and as a prosecutor in Oakland. He also highlighted his involvement in significant congressional battles, including serving as a manager during Trump’s second impeachment trial in 2021.

Swalwell’s relationship with Trump has been contentious, with the former president labeling him as a “nasty guy” and even associating him with allegations involving Chinese spies, which Swalwell has firmly denied. He cooperated fully with federal investigators and was never accused of wrongdoing. The FBI confirmed he severed ties with the individual involved immediately after receiving a “defensive briefing” in 2015.

Political analysts suggest that Swalwell’s longstanding opposition to Trump could serve as an advantage in the California gubernatorial race. According to Dr. Michael Mitchell, a lecturer in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, “There is no clear front-runner, and he’s a skilled politician.”

As Swalwell enters a competitive field, he faces six other Democratic candidates who have similarly positioned themselves as anti-Trump. California’s gubernatorial primary is set for June 2, 2026, providing candidates several months to articulate their policy agendas and connect with voters. The top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election in November.

Born in Sac City, Iowa, Swalwell was raised in California and became the first in his family to attend college, thanks to a Division 1 scholarship. He interned on Capitol Hill for the late Representative Ellen Tauscher while studying at the University of Maryland. After earning his law degree, Swalwell worked as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, leading the hate crimes unit.

During his eight years on the House Intelligence Committee, Swalwell held positions as both chairman and ranking member. He played a pivotal role in investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and both impeachments of Trump.

As Swalwell embarks on his gubernatorial campaign, he aims to differentiate himself in a crowded field while addressing critical issues affecting California residents.
