Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens clarified his intentions to stay with the team after facing disciplinary action that led to a brief benching during a recent game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Both Pickens and teammate CeeDee Lamb were sidelined for the Cowboys’ first offensive series on November 13, 2023, due to a curfew violation following a dinner at Red Rock Casino.
Despite the benching, Pickens expressed optimism about his future with the Cowboys. “I’d love to be back, especially with [Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott], all the guys really,” he stated on Thursday, according to Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys’ website. The wide receiver is currently in the final year of his contract, and discussions about his long-term future have heightened following a report indicating a strong possibility that the Cowboys could use the franchise tag to retain his rights for 2026.
When asked about how he would respond to being tagged in early 2026, Pickens noted, “I’ll have to wait probably until that comes. I can’t really see in the future, so I’ll have to wait until it gets here.”
The Cowboys’ head coach Brian Schottenheimer has also shown support for Pickens, stating he is “very in favor of George having a long-term future with us.” Following the Cowboys’ 33-16 victory over the Raiders, which improved their record to 4-5-1 this season, Pickens had an impressive performance, leading the team with nine receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown.
As the Cowboys prepare for their upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 19, 2023, Pickens leads the team with 908 receiving yards, 83 targets, and seven touchdown catches, tying him with tight end Jake Ferguson. Ferguson currently holds the team record for receptions with 60, while Pickens follows closely with 58.
Building Relationships and Looking Ahead
Following the recent developments, Pickens discussed his growing relationship with Schottenheimer since joining the Cowboys from the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year. “A lot,” he responded when asked about their connection. “Me and Schotty, I think we’re still getting even closer and closer. We were close before, and I feel like now we’re getting even closer just as the year goes on.”
This camaraderie is particularly significant as the Cowboys face ongoing challenges, including the recent loss of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, which has united the team. Pickens acknowledged that his relationship with Schottenheimer is “definitely a huge factor” in how he will navigate his situation as discussions about his future unfold.
As the Cowboys strive to remain competitive in the playoff race, Pickens’ performance on the field and his desire to stay with the team may play a critical role in the franchise’s strategy moving forward. The upcoming game against the Eagles will be a crucial test as the Cowboys aim to strengthen their position in the league.
