Winter Wildlife Spectacle: Sleigh Rides with Elk Begin Dec 5

UPDATE: Starting December 5, 2023, the Hardware Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Utah will offer thrilling sleigh rides among wild elk, captivating nature lovers and families alike. This seasonal adventure, provided by Haviland’s Old West Adventures, runs through February 15, 2024, promising a unique wildlife experience in the heart of Utah’s wilderness.

Every weekend, including select dates in late December, visitors can embark on these enchanting rides. Special dates include December 22, 23, 29, 30, and 31. These excursions not only offer breathtaking views but also educate guests on the elk’s natural history through the onsite Education Center’s “All About Elk” exhibit, as reported by wildlife.utah.gov.

WHY THIS MATTERS NOW: As winter blankets the landscape, this event provides an exceptional opportunity for families to connect with nature while learning about the majestic elk population. The rides are affordably priced at $12.50 for adults and children over the age of 9, $5 for children aged 4 to 8, and free for those aged 3 and under. Tickets must be purchased in-person at the Hardware Wildlife Education Center on the day of the ride.

In addition to the sleigh rides, the Education Center will host Christmas ornament-making sessions, allowing visitors to craft keepsakes using native flora, according to Marni Lee, Director of the DWR Hardware Wildlife Education Center. This festive engagement invites guests to take home a piece of the WMA’s rustic charm.

However, amid the excitement, there are concerns regarding brucellosis, a disease affecting elk and bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area. This bacteria poses significant risks, including abortions and low fertility rates among infected animals. With the elk known for widespread migration, wildlife managers are vigilant to prevent the disease’s spread. Jim Christensen, DWR Northern Region Wildlife Manager, emphasized that managing the viewing and feeding season’s timing is crucial to encourage elk dispersion during high-risk periods.

WHERE TO GO: The Hardware WMA is located 16 miles east of Hyrum on State Route 101, through the picturesque Blacksmith Fork Canyon. This scenic route leads to a breathtaking display of wildlife and natural beauty, inviting visitors to escape the man-made world and immerse themselves in nature.

WHAT’S NEXT: Those planning to visit should secure their tickets early due to limited availability. For more information about the rides, the Education Center, or to arrange your winter adventure, check the DWR website or contact Hardware WMA directly.

As winter approaches, the allure of wildlife experiences beckons. Visitors are encouraged to embrace this rare opportunity to witness elk in their natural habitat while supporting wildlife education and conservation efforts. This season, step into a realm where nature rules and experience the magic of winter wildlife at Hardware WMA.
