URGENT UPDATE: El Tour de Tucson kicks off this Saturday, November 4, with a major milestone as cycling legend Ralph Phillips is honored for his contributions to one of the nation’s most prestigious cycling events. This year, participation is set to surge to nearly 11,000 riders, marking a significant increase from last year’s record of 10,000 riders.
The race, now in its 42nd year, begins at 7 a.m. from the Tucson Convention Center. Phillips, who first participated in 1985, is celebrated for his dedication to developing the ride’s challenging 102-mile route, which avoids hazards like water and traffic. “I’m very humbled, I didn’t expect it,” Phillips remarked about being named the Designated Honoree.
Originally attracting just 185 riders in its inaugural year of 1983, El Tour has grown exponentially, raising nearly $130 million for local charities. The event not only showcases local talent but also draws international cyclists who train in Tucson during winter.
Phillips, known for his bike shop, Fair Wheels Bikes, partners with local broadcasting icon Allen ‘Big Al’ Kath to provide live coverage of the event. “He’s my John Madden,” said Kath, highlighting Phillips’ impact on Tucson’s cycling community.
The excitement doesn’t stop there. With the recent opening of the new Tucson Velodrome, Phillips anticipates even more international riders flocking to the city. “We’ve been trying to get one in for 50 years. I’m glad they did it in my lifetime,” he stated.
As cyclists prepare to hit the streets on Saturday, Phillips and the El Tour community celebrate not just the race, but the spirit of cycling that has brought together thousands over the years. This year’s event is set to be a memorable tribute to a local legend and a testament to Tucson’s thriving cycling culture.
