Redwood Giants Fall Short in Semifinals, Shut Out by Miramonte

UPDATE: The Redwood High football team’s season ended abruptly as they suffered a 20-0 loss to Miramonte in the North Coast Section Division IV semifinals on November 10, 2023, in Orinda. Despite multiple opportunities deep in Miramonte territory, the Giants (6-6) were unable to convert, marking a disappointing conclusion to their playoff run.

Redwood’s offense struggled significantly, managing to drive into Miramonte’s 30-yard line on six occasions but failing to score each time, going 1-for-5 on crucial fourth-down conversions. The Matadors capitalized on their chances with two touchdowns and a pair of field goals from James Rogers, including a long 41-yard kick.

The game kicked off with promise for Redwood as quarterback Cash Ward connected with Dylan McGrath for a quick screen pass that led to a remarkable 50-yard gain to the Miramonte 25-yard line. However, the Giants’ momentum quickly stalled, and they turned the ball over on downs.

Miramonte responded instantly, with quarterback Lane Dalton launching a stunning 60-yard pass to set up their first touchdown, giving them an early 7-0 lead. The Giants faced challenges right after, with a penalty placing the Matadors in prime scoring position. Rogers’ 35-yard field goal further extended Miramonte’s advantage to 10-0.

As the game progressed, Redwood’s offense faltered, unable to find rhythm and repeatedly going three-and-out. A critical moment came just before halftime when Miramonte nearly lost possession on a fumble, but the ruling favored them, allowing another touchdown to push the lead to 17-0 with 1:42 remaining in the half.

Despite a valiant effort to regroup, Redwood’s attempts to claw back into the game were stymied. Their best scoring opportunity came late in the second half, but a fourth-down pass fell incomplete, sealing their fate.

With only a few minutes left, Miramonte’s Rogers capped off the scoring with another field goal, bringing the final score to 20-0. The Giants ended their season with a heart-wrenching loss, having reached the D-IV title game last season.

Fans and players alike are left reflecting on what might have been, as Redwood’s playoff aspirations come to a sudden halt. The team will now look to regroup and rebuild for next season, hoping to return stronger in their quest for the championship.

As the dust settles on this season, all eyes will be on Redwood’s next steps and how they will respond to this tough defeat.
