UPDATE: Air Force Lt. Col. Dane Coppini, a veteran pilot with 15 years of experience, will soar over the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Indianapolis Colts game this Sunday, October 15, 2023, at 10 a.m. in Kansas City. This flyover, featuring four jets, is part of the NFL’s Military Appreciation Month and highlights the contributions of military personnel.
Coppini, who hails from Ferndale, is assigned to the 87th Flying Training Squadron, known as the “Red Bulls.” Operating from Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, the squadron trains Air Force pilots using the T-38C Talon, the U.S. Air Force’s primary training jet. This prestigious honor marks a significant milestone for Coppini, who feels immense pride in representing his hometown.
Reflecting on his journey, Coppini emphasizes the support he’s received from friends and family in Ferndale. “Growing up in a small town, you don’t realize how special it is until you leave,” he shared. “The community has been fantastic, and I appreciate it more now than I did as a kid.”
With a military career spanning 19 years, Coppini transitioned from enlisted Air Force security forces to pilot training after his first deployment. He is currently an instructor, training the next generation of fighter pilots. His commitment to service includes 10 deployments, with missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Africa.
Coppini’s mother, Carrie Coppini, expressed overwhelming pride in his accomplishments, stating, “We’re super proud of him; he’s a high flier!” The family plans to watch the flyover together and celebrate this momentous occasion.
