UPDATE: In a stunning comeback, University of Maine freshman goalie Mathis Rousseau delivered a game-changing performance, securing a 3-0 victory over Boston College just hours ago. This marks Rousseau’s first start in 21 days after a previous win against Boston University.
Rousseau took the ice after teammate Albin Boija struggled in a 7-3 loss to Boston College on Friday night, allowing six goals on just 27 shots. The freshman’s exceptional skills shone through as he achieved an impressive 21-save shutout, a crucial rebound for the team.
“It went pretty well. They’re obviously a good team and everybody was pretty pumped up to get back at them today after yesterday’s game,” Rousseau stated post-game. He highlighted his focus on rebound control, emphasizing, “I didn’t give them second chances very often today.”
The Quebec native, who previously starred for Team Canada in the 2023-24 World Junior Championships, where he recorded the tournament’s third-best goals-against average (2.00) and fourth-best save percentage (.912), demonstrated his readiness for this pivotal match.
“It can be difficult to play well when you haven’t played in a while. But when you finally get your chance, you’re pretty pumped up about it and you have to make sure you’re ready for it,” Rousseau added.
Head coach Ben Barr praised Rousseau’s performance, stating, “We gave up some Grade-A chances but he made some saves all night and kept us ahead.” He noted that the team improved their defensive efforts, saying, “The guys blocked more shots and did more of the little things tonight than we did last night.”
Adding to the offensive momentum, freshman right wing Miguel Marques contributed significantly with two goals, showcasing his opportunistic play. “He has a good offensive mind,” Barr remarked, underscoring the synergy between the players.
This victory not only boosts team morale but also re-establishes the University of Maine’s competitive edge in the league. As fans celebrate Rousseau’s remarkable return, all eyes will be on how the team builds on this momentum in their upcoming matches.
With the season heating up, the University of Maine will look to maintain this winning streak. Stay tuned for more updates on Rousseau and the Black Bears’ journey this season!
