UPDATE: Sacramento’s aggressive approach to homelessness is showing significant progress, with the City’s Incident Management Team (IMT) reporting the management of 2,096 cases during the week of November 10-16, 2023. This surge in action comes as the city grapples with a pressing homelessness crisis, underscoring the urgency of immediate solutions.
During this week alone, the city received 544 calls through its 311 customer service line, which contributed to the staggering number of cases opened. Notably, the tally of cases exceeded call volume since multiple issues can arise from a single report. In a positive turn, outreach efforts led to the successful closure of 2,466 cases, indicating that many individuals received the necessary assistance or compliance was achieved.
In an encouraging outcome for vulnerable populations, outreach staff connected 74 individuals with local shelters and critical resources, enrolling them into vital databases. Furthermore, 17 individuals found housing through the City’s Roseville Road campus and the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) — a pivotal step in addressing homelessness.
Despite these advancements, challenges persist. Currently, there are no available Pallet homes or trailers at the Roseville Road campus and only two spaces at the OEC. City-funded shelters are operating with an average of 13 openings, highlighting the ongoing struggle to meet the demand for housing.
The City of Sacramento is also taking measures to address the visible impact of homelessness. In a significant cleanup effort, the IMT removed an astonishing 50,140 pounds of trash from public spaces, reinforcing the city’s commitment to maintaining a clean environment while tackling homelessness.
Transparency remains a cornerstone of Sacramento’s strategy, with a data dashboard accessible to the public. This platform tracks the IMT’s weekly progress since September 2023, providing cumulative figures for outreach, compliance, and cleanup efforts.
