U.S. Launches Campaign to Tackle 400% Rise in Air Travel Outbursts

The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated a new campaign aimed at reducing unruly behavior on flights, following a startling 400% increase in in-flight outbursts since 2019. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the initiative, named “The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You,” in response to rising concerns about passenger conduct during air travel.

In a recent news release, Duffy highlighted that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recorded a doubling of “unruly passenger events” since 2019. From January 2021 to the present, there have been approximately 13,800 incidents, with reports indicating that one in five flight attendants experienced physical altercations in 2021 alone. Duffy noted that the number of reports surged sixfold between 2020 and 2021, and by 2024, incidents had reached double the levels seen in 2019.

Duffy emphasized the need to restore a sense of civility in air travel, stating, “It’s not your imagination. Traveling has become more uncivilized!” He expressed that the current atmosphere undermines the joy and relaxation that travel should encompass. “Americans already feel divided and stressed. We can all do our part to bring back civility, manners, and common sense,” he added in the release.

To promote positive behavior, Duffy urged travelers to reflect on simple acts of kindness and respect while flying. He posed questions such as whether passengers are helping those in need, like the elderly or pregnant women, if they are dressing appropriately, and if they are expressing gratitude towards flight attendants.

Goals of the Campaign

The primary objective of the campaign is to spark a nationwide dialogue on how to enhance courtesy in air travel. Duffy believes that improving interactions among passengers, gate workers, flight attendants, and pilots will contribute to a more pleasant flying experience for everyone involved.

Additionally, Duffy took to social media to announce that President Donald Trump is awarding 776 air traffic controllers and technicians with $10,000 bonuses for their dedication during the government shutdown. He referred to this gesture as “Santa’s coming to town a little early,” highlighting the significance of acknowledging the hard work of those in the aviation industry.

The Department of Transportation aims to foster an environment where civility and respect are paramount, transforming air travel back into an enjoyable experience. As the holiday season approaches, the campaign serves as a timely reminder for travelers to embody the spirit of kindness and understanding.
