Restored 21st Michigan Regiment Flag to Be Unveiled in Ionia

Ionia is set to commemorate a significant piece of history with the unveiling of the fully restored battle flag of the 21st Michigan Regiment on Saturday, April 20, 2024. The ceremony will take place at the Ionia Armory at 1 p.m., organized by VFW Post 12082 and VFW Post 4646. This historic flag, which has been a symbol of local sacrifice and pride for over 150 years, was recently restored in North Carolina after being carefully removed from the Ionia County Courthouse in April 2024.

The flag was crafted by the “Ladies of Ionia,” a group of mothers whose sons served in the 21st Michigan Infantry. It has been a potent reminder of the courage and commitment of those who fought during the American Civil War. “This project has always been about more than restoring a historic relic,” said Eric Calley, commander of Post 4646. “It’s about preserving the story of those who carried this flag into battle — honoring their sacrifice and ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations.”

Restoration and Community Efforts

The restoration of the flag was made possible through the collaborative efforts of local historians, veterans, and community advocates. Textile conservators specializing in Civil War artifacts worked diligently to stabilize and preserve the fragile fabric. This meticulous process ensures that this significant piece of Michigan history can be proudly displayed for decades to come.

Shane Houghton, quartermaster of Post 12082, expressed the importance of the flag’s return to Ionia. “This flag embodies endurance, unity and the unwavering spirit of those who served,” he stated. “Its return is a powerful reminder of the generations who defended our freedom and the community that continues to honor them.”
