URGENT UPDATE: A heartfelt holiday tradition is lighting up Westlake as Timothy Newsome continues his late father’s legacy with an awe-inspiring Christmas display. Just two years after his father, Eddie JLP Newsome, passed away on May 5, 2024, Timothy is determined to keep the festive spirit alive by decorating his yard at 2709 Arthur St. with a staggering 8,080 lights.
This year’s preparations are in full swing as Timothy reflects on the cherished memories of decorating alongside his father. “My dad started this tradition many years before I was born,” Timothy shared. “He took immense pride in having the brightest house on the block.”
The elaborate display features not only lights but also an impressive collection of 256 plastic figurines and unique wooden nutcrackers made by local Sulphur Ag students. “We’ve added cutouts for people to take pictures, and every year I try to reorganize the setup differently,” he explained.
Timothy’s commitment to this annual spectacle takes about two weeks to complete, a labor of love that honors his father’s memory. “Even in his last Christmas with us, Dad was outside helping me decorate my yard,” he recalled. The display is not just about lights; it’s a tribute to the bond they shared and the joy it brought to their community.
“People drive in from Texas each year to see it,” Timothy said. “The reactions and special memories from passers-by mean the world to me.” His neighbors have also joined in, extending their yards to accommodate the vibrant celebration.
This year’s setup includes 233 extension cords, 70 strings of lights, and a special empty chair placed outside in tribute to his father. “I know he’s still there with me,” Timothy stated, emphasizing the emotional connection behind the display.
The Newsome family tradition has transformed into a beacon of hope and joy, illuminating their neighborhood and keeping the holiday spirit alive. “I hope everyone enjoys the lights as much as my father and I have over the years,” Timothy concluded.
For those in the Westlake area, the display promises to be a heartwarming sight that embodies the true essence of Christmas, inviting all to share in the magical memories that continue to shine brightly.
