Vallejo’s ‘Photos with Santa’ Event Unites Community for Charity

The annual “Photos with Santa” event hosted by the Humane Society of the North Bay took place on December 2, 2023, at Brickmania Mare Island in Vallejo. Families gathered to capture festive moments with Santa Claus and their pets, supporting a local charity in the process. This year’s gathering was marked by the presence of Thomas Bilbo, Vallejo’s beloved Santa, who celebrated his 30th year in the role.

Bilbo, accompanied by Julie Overton as Mrs. Claus, expressed his joy in participating. “It’s my way of giving back to my community,” he commented, reflecting on how he started this tradition in Mississippi in 1995 before bringing it to Vallejo in 2004. His commitment to embodying the spirit of Santa has been a source of happiness for him and the community alike.

Community Spirit and Charitable Support

The event coincided with the Vallejo Farmers Market, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with holiday cheer. Bilbo emphasized the importance of supporting local vendors while promoting the humane society and other charitable organizations during this festive season. “It’s about getting out there, buying food at the Farmers Market, and enjoying time promoting the humane society,” he stated.

Participants included a diverse group of attendees, from recently adopted puppies to enthusiastic children, all eager to take photos with Santa. A range of Christmas-themed chew toys and festive costumes were available for purchase on a donation basis, contributing additional funds to the charity.

Joseph Hayden, President of the Humane Society of the North Bay Board, noted the event’s significance to the community, stating, “People would be very disappointed if we didn’t do this every year.” The annual occurrence has fostered a sense of tradition, with many families returning year after year.

For the animals involved, the occasion serves as a reunion for some former shelter residents who return with their new families. Hayden remarked that it feels like a joyful reconnection, particularly when past pets are spotted in the crowd. While most participants are dogs, the event has also welcomed unique pets, including chickens and cockatiels, adding a delightful twist to the festivities.

Volunteer Efforts and Community Engagement

Bilbo and Overton’s dedication to supporting the humane society has made them cherished figures in the community. Hayden humorously referred to Bilbo as “Vallejo’s hometown Santa,” highlighting his enduring popularity. Volunteers, dressed in festive elf attire, also played a vital role in the event. Among them was Stacey Loew, a long-time volunteer with the humane society, who embraced her first year as an elf.

“You know, theater and animals are two of my passions,” said Loew, who is also the Founder, Producer, and Vice President of Bay Area Stage Productions. She shared the experience of posing with Radar, her recently adopted dog, and expressed her delight in witnessing the community come together for a good cause.

Bilbo concluded by reflecting on the impact of their efforts: “It’s just great to see the community come out year after year to support causes. By giving up my time and portraying someone who’s loved, I hope to encourage people to support organizations doing essential work.” The event not only fosters a festive spirit but also underscores the importance of community support for local charities during the holiday season.
