Roma Restaurant, a staple of Greeley’s dining scene for nearly 40 years, has announced its closure, with the final day of service set for December 30, 2023. Known for its pizza, casual Italian dishes, and the distinctive 34-ounce “bazooka” drinks, the restaurant has become a beloved gathering place for locals and students from the nearby University of Northern Colorado.
In a recent Facebook post, the restaurant cited ongoing challenges with the city of Greeley as a significant factor in its decision to close. The post detailed issues ranging from liquor enforcement to construction and parking difficulties, stating, “Unfortunately, we’ve found ourselves in a constant battle with the city of Greeley — from liquor enforcement challenges to construction and parking issues, including both customers and staff receiving parking tickets.” The owners expressed disappointment in the perceived lack of support for small businesses, highlighting a missed opportunity for community collaboration.
The restaurant, located at 728 16th Street, is not the first establishment on this thoroughfare to shut down following the commencement of the 16th Street Enhancement Project in November 2024. This initiative aims to modernize amenities and improve mobility options along 16th Street from 7th to 11th Avenues. Although road closures have primarily affected areas west of 8th Avenue, the impact on local businesses has been noticeable.
La Petite French Bakery, situated at 919 16th Street, closed its doors last month, attributing its decision to the ongoing construction. Additionally, Pinocchios Incredible Italian, located at 905 16th Street, temporarily ceased operations during the summer due to construction-related concerns but has since reopened.
Roma Restaurant opened its doors in 1988 and quickly became a go-to destination for many in the community. In their farewell message, the owners encouraged patrons to visit one last time, stating, “Over the next month, we hope you’ll stop by — raise one last bazooka, enjoy one more hothouse pizza or your favorite Caroli, and make a few final memories with us.”
As the restaurant prepares to close, the Greeley community reflects on the impact of longstanding local businesses and the challenges they face in an evolving urban landscape. City staff were unavailable for comment at the time of publication, and efforts to reach the Downtown Development Authority for insights into the situation were also unsuccessful.
