St. Louis Offers Free Firewood to Residents This Winter

Residents of St. Louis can benefit from a new initiative that provides free firewood this winter, made available by the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. The program aims to support local residents during the colder months and is accessible at several select locations while supplies last.

The free firewood can be collected at three designated sites: the lower Muny Opera Parking Lot in Forest Park, near the compost area off Holly Hills Drive in Carondelet Park, and north of Picnic Site #4 in O’Fallon Park. The initiative highlights the city’s commitment to sustainability and community support, according to the City of St. Louis.

Greg Hayes, Director of Parks, noted that the program is made possible through ongoing park maintenance efforts and the city’s response to storm damage, which often results in tree removals. The firewood available through this program is derived from these city tree removal activities.

Firewood will be delivered to the designated locations in the afternoons from Monday to Friday. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with availability varying by day and location. Residents can expect the program to continue through early March 2026, as long as supplies last.

It is important to note that commercial vehicles or trailers are not permitted to collect firewood. For further inquiries or information about the collection process, residents are encouraged to contact the Forestry Division at (314) 613-7200.

This initiative not only provides essential resources during winter but also utilizes the city’s maintenance efforts to benefit the community, fostering a sense of support and sustainability among St. Louis residents.
