Daytona 500 Kicks Off NASCAR Season with Race Day Changes

The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series will officially commence on Sunday, February 15, with the much-anticipated 68th running of the Daytona 500. This iconic event, known as “The Great American Race,” has seen its start time adjusted to 1:30 p.m. ET. Fans can catch the action on FOX, Fox One, MRN Radio, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Weather forecasts predict scattered showers and thunderstorms at the Daytona International Speedway, which could lead to potential delays or interruptions throughout the race. The competitors will complete 200 laps around the storied 2.5-mile track, all vying for the prestigious Harley J. Earl Trophy in Victory Lane.

Since 1982, the Daytona 500 has marked the start of the NASCAR season every February. The event is widely regarded as the most significant and prestigious race in the NASCAR calendar. Last year, William Byron triumphed, securing his second consecutive victory in this race.

Byron stands out as one of only two active drivers with multiple Daytona 500 wins, alongside Denny Hamlin, who has claimed the checkered flag three times. If Byron emerges victorious again, he would be the first driver to achieve three straight wins in this renowned event. The all-time leader in Daytona 500 victories is Richard Petty, with seven wins, while Cale Yarborough follows with four. Hamlin is in a strong position to potentially tie for second all-time in Daytona 500 wins.

Among the other notable competitors are Ryan Blaney, who is chasing his first Daytona 500 victory, and Joey Logano, seeking to end his drought since 2015. Last year’s champion, Byron, cannot be underestimated as he aims to add another trophy to his collection.

This year’s race also carries emotional significance as it commemorates the 25th anniversary of the tragic death of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr., who perished in a crash during the last lap in 2001. Earnhardt has one Daytona 500 win and holds the record for the most overall victories at Daytona International Speedway, with a remarkable total of 34.

In addition to the thrilling racing action, the event will feature a performance by singer Miranda Lambert before the race, with actor Kurt Russell set to lead the field to the green flag.

As the excitement builds for the 2026 Daytona 500, fans around the world eagerly await the start of this historic race.
