Junie B. Jones Takes Center Stage in Musical Premiere This Weekend

The delightful world of Junie B. Jones will come to life this weekend as the Christian Youth Theater (CYT) presents “Junie B. Jones The Musical” at the F.G. Bulber Auditorium on the McNeese State University campus. The musical showcases the adventures of a spirited first-grader who embraces the challenges of growing up with humor and heart, making it a must-see for families.

In this vibrant production, Junie navigates her first year in school, confronting new friends and unexpected obstacles. Brittany Menard, the artistic director for CYT, emphasizes the essence of the story: “Junie is entering into the first grade, and with a new grade comes new challenges. It’s about how she finds the fun and beauty in it.” This marks Menard’s directorial debut, having been with CYT since its inception in 2017 and participating in all 21 previous shows.

The cast comprises 67 talented students, most of whom are under the age of 10. Menard expresses her excitement at working with such a young group, many of whom are performing for the first time. “I’ve watched most of these kids grow up, and for some, this is their very first show,” she noted.

The production timeline for “Junie B. Jones” was notably compressed, with a six-week turnaround instead of the typical ten weeks. Menard highlighted the team’s strategic approach to maximize every rehearsal moment. “Being the director of this show brings more responsibilities, but I’m grateful for the chance to empower these children and create a world for them,” she said.

To foster teamwork among the cast, Menard divided them into three groups, each creating their own chants for rehearsals. This division helps build friendships and support among the young performers. “What you see on stage might look impossible, but kids are incredibly resilient. I keep the atmosphere light and fun,” she added.

Menard incorporates motivational practices into rehearsals, including readings from Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others.” She hopes that audience members will leave inspired to embrace their individuality. “As kids grow older, they can become self-conscious. This musical celebrates Junie being true to herself, just as she was created,” Menard explained.

The production promises to be an enjoyable experience for all ages. “It’s funny, sweet, and charming,” Menard remarked. “The show is filled with joy and laughter and can be appreciated by anyone.”
