Lakewood Civic Auditorium Hosts Eric Carmen Tribute Show

A tribute show celebrating the music of Eric Carmen will take place on November 25, 2023, at the Lakewood Civic Auditorium. The event, titled “EC50: A Celebration of Eric Carmen’s Musical Legacy,” is organized by Stephen Knill, a Lakewood native and former bass player on Carmen’s 1975 solo debut album. This special occasion marks a significant return for Knill, who graduated from Lakewood High School in 1972.

Knill explained the personal connection to the venue, stating, “I grew up in the auditorium. I grew up in the school. I’ve never really given anything back. I decided I needed to do that and this is it.” The show aims to honor Carmen, who was a prominent figure in the music scene as the frontman of The Raspberries and a celebrated solo artist until his passing last year.

Event Highlights and Collaborations

The tribute will feature members of Carmen’s solo-era band alongside special guest vocalists, the student rock orchestra known as the Lakewood Project, and the Lakewood High School Orchestra, including alumni members. Attendees can expect to hear some of Carmen’s iconic hits such as “All by Myself,” “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again,” “Sunrise,” and “Hungry Eyes.”

Knill emphasized that the performance is designed to reflect what Carmen would have envisioned for a concert in 2025, had he been able to utilize extensive resources. “He would have a full orchestra and perform at a beautiful 1,800-seat venue,” Knill added.

Rehearsals for the Lakewood Project have exceeded expectations, according to Knill. “The band was a bit skeptical until they heard the kids play… Oh my God, they’re better than us. So it’s a win all the way across the board.” This rock orchestra comprises 47 student musicians, complemented by 11 alumni from the Lakewood High School Orchestra.

A Vision Realized

Elizabeth A. Hankins, the director of the Lakewood Project, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, calling it “mind-blowing.” She noted, “To see this vision come to life feels like the culmination of my 36 years of teaching—a celebration of music, community, and the countless students who have made this journey so meaningful.”

The Lakewood Project distinguishes itself by blending rock and classical music, performing without a conductor, which fosters teamwork and adaptability among its musicians. Hankins highlighted the students’ confidence and their ability to thrive in a professional setting, making them well-suited to collaborate with the Eric Carmen Band and special guests.

The upcoming tribute show not only celebrates Carmen’s legacy but also reinforces the strong sense of community within Lakewood. As it brings together current students and alumni, the event promises to be a memorable experience for all involved.
