Michelle Pfeiffer Stars in Holiday Comedy ‘Oh. What. Fun.’

Christmas films often fall into predictable categories, but the new Amazon holiday movie “Oh. What. Fun.” offers a fresh take. Directed by Michael Showalter, who gained attention for the romantic comedy “The Idea of You,” this screwball comedy features Michelle Pfeiffer as Claire Clauster, a mother whose family takes her for granted. The film is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.

In a twist reminiscent of “Home Alone,” Claire feels so undervalued that she decides to leave her family just before Christmas after they unintentionally abandon her. Her character is complex, navigating feelings of neglect while engaging in questionable behavior, including shoplifting and sneaking onto a live Christmas talk show hosted by Eva Longoria. “Michelle is one of my favorite actresses of all time,” Showalter shared in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “She has been in so many movies that I love… This character is funny but is also incredibly human and complicated.”

The ensemble cast includes a mix of comedic and dramatic talents. Denis Leary and Jason Schwartzman bring their comedic flair, while Felicity Jones, Dominic Sessa, and Chloe Grace Moretz add depth to the narrative. Moretz portrays Taylor, who introduces a new girlfriend each Christmas to shield herself from her chaotic family. Sessa plays Sammy, the youngest son, who grapples with heartbreak and emotional distance from his family. “He feels her love is guaranteed and he doesn’t have to work at it,” Sessa said.

Filming took place during the sweltering heat of July in Atlanta, where temperatures often exceeded 30 degrees Celsius. Showalter noted the challenge of creating a winter atmosphere while shooting in such conditions. The Clauster family home was filmed in a Buckhead residence, echoing the iconic McAllister house from “Home Alone.” The film also features a neighboring family, the Wang-Wassermans, whose lavish lifestyle adds to Claire’s frustrations. Veteran actress Joan Chen plays Jeanne Wang-Wasserman, delivering a performance that blends humor and disdain.

Showalter highlighted a particular scene as a favorite, where Sammy dances joyfully with a new acquaintance in a bar to No Doubt’s cover of “It’s My Life,” juxtaposed with a montage of other characters’ struggles. “It feels very nostalgic. It takes me back to movies from the ‘80s and my own childhood,” he remarked. The film aims to capture the essence of family dynamics during the holiday season, showcasing both the conflicts and connections that arise.

As audiences prepare for the holiday season, “Oh. What. Fun.” presents an opportunity to reflect on family relationships while delivering laughter and warmth. The film’s engaging storyline and relatable characters may resonate with viewers looking for a unique holiday experience.
