Prime Video has announced the revival of the renowned *Stargate* franchise with a new television series. The Amazon-owned streaming platform has commissioned a fresh installment titled simply *Stargate*, developed by Amazon MGM Studios, which holds the rights to the franchise. The series will be helmed by creator and showrunner Martin Gero, who has a long history with the franchise, having worked on the previous live-action shows.
In a statement, Gero reflected on his journey with *Stargate*, noting, “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on *Stargate: Atlantis*. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. *Stargate* taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA.” He expressed his excitement about leading the franchise into its next phase, emphasizing that the new series is dedicated to long-time fans as well as newcomers. “For those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary,” he added.
The *Stargate* franchise originally launched with a feature film in 1994, written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who also directed the film. This cinematic debut led to the creation of three television series: *Stargate SG-1*, *Stargate Atlantis*, and *Stargate Universe*. The franchise also produced two direct-to-DVD films, a short-lived animated series, and a web series in 2018. The upcoming show marks the first television series in the franchise since *Stargate Universe* concluded in 2011.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Prime Video describes the new series as a “bold new chapter” in the *Stargate* saga. Gero will serve as executive producer alongside Joby Harold from *Obi-Wan Kenobi* and Tory Tunnell from *Monarch: Legacy of Monsters*. They will collaborate with Devlin and Emmerich on the project. Additionally, Brad Wright, who co-created the previous series, and Joe Mallozzi, an executive producer and writer on all three previous shows, will act as consulting producers.
According to Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD TV development at Amazon MGM Studios, “*Stargate* is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos.” He expressed enthusiasm about partnering with the creative team to bring a new chapter of this beloved franchise to a global audience, honoring its rich legacy while exploring new emotional depth.
Fans of the *Stargate* universe can look forward to this exciting revival, which promises to blend nostalgia with innovation, appealing to both dedicated followers and new viewers.
