Elle Smith, an 11-year-old budding artist, is set to host a fundraising art show on March 22, 2025, in memory of her late aunt, Kim Keene. The event, titled “Benefit for Bubbles,” aims to support Paint Pink, a nonprofit organization founded by Keene to assist individuals battling cancer. Kim Keene passed away from breast cancer in September 2024, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and compassion.
Known affectionately as Aunt Bubbles due to her vibrant personality, Kim Keene was not only an artist but also the former owner of the Starving Artist Cafe in Norfolk. Following her diagnosis, she created Paint Pink to provide financial aid to those facing difficulties while fighting cancer. “One of Kim’s wishes before passing was for us to keep helping others through Paint Pink,” stated her sister, Kathy Keene. “Painting was her outlet, and she wanted to support others in similar situations.”
Art Show Details and Community Impact
In a touching tribute, Elle plans to showcase between 50 and 100 pieces of her artwork during the event. All proceeds from the sales will directly benefit Paint Pink. Kathy Keene expressed her pride in her daughter’s initiative, noting that Elle had been inspired by her aunt’s passion for art. “Elle really wants to raise lots of money, and when looking at her paintings, it feels like Kim is living on through them,” she shared.
Elle’s journey into organizing this fundraiser began with a school assignment focused on community service. Initially unsure of how to proceed, she surprised her mother with the idea of hosting an art show after creating several impressive pieces during recent snow days. “I wasn’t sure about the idea at first,” Kathy said, “but when I saw her art, I realized she is talented like her aunt.”
With her mother’s support, Elle developed a business plan and presented it to the Paint Pink board, who eagerly embraced the concept. The young artist has meticulously planned every detail of the event, from decorations to refreshments, including balloons, ribbons, and birthday cupcakes.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Elle has always had a passion for painting, but attending her aunt’s art shows opened her eyes to the potential of art as a means to help others. “My aunt was such a great person and inspired me to be a better person,” she reflected. “She showed me that even the small things can make a difference. My aunt would love this benefit show a million percent.”
As the date approaches, anticipation builds for “Benefit for Bubbles,” which will take place at The Gallery at Paint Pink, located at 2200 Colonial Ave, #15, from 1-4 p.m. on March 22. For those unable to attend but wishing to contribute, donations can be made through the Paint Pink website.
Elle Smith’s efforts not only honor her aunt’s memory but also bring the community together to support a cause that impacts many. Through her creativity and determination, she embodies the spirit of Paint Pink and continues the mission of helping others navigate the challenges of cancer.
