Actor and comedian Dave Coulier, known for his role on the beloved sitcom Full House, has revealed he has been diagnosed with early-stage tongue cancer. This announcement comes just months after he celebrated entering remission from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. During a recent interview on NBC’s Today show, Coulier shared that the cancer was detected in a routine follow-up scan.
Coulier, 66, explained that the diagnosis followed a routine PET scan. The scan revealed an issue that led doctors to identify P16 squamous carcinoma located at the base of his tongue. He reassured fans that this diagnosis is not related to his previous battle with lymphoma. “They said it could stem from having an HPV virus up to 30 years ago,” he noted. “A lot of people carry the HPV virus, but they said mine activated and turned into a carcinoma.”
Despite the challenges, Coulier expressed optimism regarding his prognosis. He highlighted a curability rate of more than 90 percent for this type of cancer. To treat the condition, he has begun a comprehensive treatment plan that includes 35 radiation sessions, which are scheduled to conclude on December 31, 2023.
In discussing his current treatment, Coulier remarked, “It’s a whole different animal than chemo. It doesn’t feel as aggressive, but there are still side effects.” He also addressed the emotional toll that receiving two cancer diagnoses in such a short span has had on his family, particularly his wife, Melissa Coulier.
Coulier emphasized the importance of early detection, stating, “I’m going to get on the other side of this.” He shared his belief that proactive health screenings have played a crucial role in his journey, saying, “The thing that has really saved my life… is that early detection saved my life, not just the first time but the second time as well.” He urged others to be diligent about their health screenings, including colonoscopies, prostate exams, and breast exams.
