Jonathan Van Ness, the star of the popular series Queer Eye, has addressed the backlash he received after publicly sharing his weight loss journey, which involved the use of the weight loss drug GLP-1. On October 30, 2023, Van Ness took to TikTok to clarify his motivations for using the medication, emphasizing his commitment to body positivity and self-acceptance despite criticisms suggesting otherwise.
In his video, Van Ness stated, “What do you mean? I’m all about body neutrality. The way that you look does not define your worth, doesn’t define your lovableness.” He reinforced the message that everyone deserves love and celebration, irrespective of their body shape or size. This response comes after some fans expressed concerns that his actions contradicted his previous advocacy for body positivity.
Health Journey and Decision to Use GLP-1
Van Ness revealed that he experienced a “medical issue” in 2023, which prompted him to seek medical assistance for his health concerns. He explained that he chose to use GLP-1, a medication known for its effectiveness in treating diabetes and aiding in weight loss, because he “just didn’t feel good.” Alongside medication, he has incorporated regular exercise, including Pilates, into his routine.
Reflecting on his journey, he noted, “My body’s never in my whole life — I’ve always wanted to have an ab. I’ve never had abs. And I feel really good, so I’m taking my shirt off a lot.” Van Ness expressed a newfound sense of confidence, stating, “I was always really cute, and I always felt cute. But I just didn’t feel good, and now I feel good.” He added that he currently feels “like a f**king minx right now,” highlighting his desire to look back fondly on his body in his 30s.
Previous Challenges and Advocacy
In January 2023, Van Ness discussed his use of GLP-1 in relation to his struggles with binge eating disorder. He shared before-and-after photos on his Instagram Story, indicating that he had lost approximately 66 pounds. In a candid admission, he stated, “I have a confession to make. Yes, I am on a GLP-1 or a weight-loss medication. If you have been following me for a long time, you’ll know that I gained and lost weight several times very publicly. And this time in my life, I knew that I needed a little bit of extra help.”
Van Ness began his GLP-1 injections in September 2023, describing a significant improvement in his mental health as he regained control over his eating habits. He reflected, “I was consistently making decisions that I regretted with compulsive eating and with bingeing that just left me feeling really not good, depressed and out of control.”
Emphasizing the importance of seeking help, he stated, “This time, I needed help.” For those facing similar challenges, resources such as the National Alliance for Eating Disorders are available, offering support and guidance. Individuals can visit their website or call their hotline for assistance.
Van Ness’s candid approach to discussing his health journey underscores the complexities surrounding body image and mental health. His message resonates with many who grapple with similar struggles, reinforcing the idea that seeking help is a crucial step towards healing.
