Loneliness UK, an initiative founded by Burnley resident Michael Helps, is now utilizing TikTok to address health anxiety and social isolation. Originally launched as a letter-writing service, the organization has evolved over the past three years to adapt to modern communication trends while remaining committed to its core mission.
Helps established Loneliness UK to encourage individuals to connect through written correspondence, especially targeting the elderly. He believes that this method strengthens community ties and provides emotional support. Despite facing challenges, he remains dedicated to expanding the reach of his organization.
“My journey with Loneliness UK has been challenging with many ups and downs,” said Helps. “But I still strive to make Loneliness UK a household name to support those in times of need.” He continues to encourage anyone feeling lonely to reach out through letters, whether online or by post. “No one should ever feel alone. We are here to support and listen.”
In an effort to modernize his outreach, Helps has embraced TikTok to share his personal experiences with loneliness and loss. Over the last three months, he has posted videos on various topics, including the impact of losing loved ones and managing health anxiety. One of his videos garnered over 24,000 views and sparked over 133 comments from viewers who resonated with his message.
“Traveling across the UK, I committed to uploading videos that address diverse topics to reach those who need someone to talk to,” he explained. This approach not only broadens the audience but also encourages open discussions about mental health and emotional well-being.
To sustain Loneliness UK as a free service, Helps is currently funding the initiative out of his own pocket. To assist with costs, he has launched a GoFundMe page, emphasizing that the service will remain free for anyone experiencing loneliness. “Loneliness UK will never become a service that people who are suffering with loneliness will have to pay for,” he stated firmly.
The issue of loneliness is increasingly recognized as a significant global health concern, comparable to issues like obesity and smoking. It has profound effects on both physical and mental health, particularly among young people. “Loneliness UK is accessible to all ages and is free. All you need is a pen, paper, envelope, and stamp,” Helps added.
