A young boy from Michigan, Kaden Stevenson, is advocating for flu vaccination after a severe case of influenza drastically changed his life. Three years ago, Kaden contracted the flu, which led to serious complications, including a severe bloodstream infection. At just seven years old, he underwent amputations of both legs as a result of the illness.
In an inspiring turn, Kaden is using his experience to educate others about the importance of flu prevention. Partnering with the advocacy group Families Fighting Flu, he has introduced a comic book titled “Kaden Blaze Fights Flu Bug.” The comic features Kaden’s alter ego, Kaden Blaze, as a superhero dedicated to battling the flu and raising awareness about the virus.

Kaden’s story aims to promote flu vaccination as a vital measure for health safety. Michele Slafkosky, Executive Director of Families Fighting Flu, emphasized the organization’s mission to enhance public understanding regarding the flu’s seriousness and the importance of vaccination. “Our mission is to improve awareness and education to help support getting people vaccinated,” she stated.
Currently, flu activity in the United States is reported to be low but is on the rise, particularly among children and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This highlights the relevance of Kaden’s message as flu season approaches.
The Stevenson family believes that the comic book not only encourages vaccination but also serves as a beacon of hope. Kaden’s mother, Michele Stevenson, expressed pride in her son’s ability to share his journey in such a powerful way. “We want to spread a message of hope and resilience,” she said.
