Alaska Nonprofit Offers Unique Valentine’s Day Fundraiser

A creative fundraiser is returning to the Bird Treatment and Learning Center in Alaska this Valentine’s Day. The event, known as the Love Hurts fundraiser, allows participants to name a rat after an ex-partner and symbolically feed it to a raptor. This unique offering not only provides a playful outlet for heartbreak but also supports a local nonprofit dedicated to bird rehabilitation.

The Love Hurts fundraiser invites donors to contribute at various levels. For a donation of $50, individuals can feed a symbolic rat to a raptor. Those who wish to take the experience a step further can pay $100 to name the rat after their former partner, with a video capturing the moment of the raptor’s meal. Additionally, for $10, donors can choose to watch a magpie eat mealworms while metaphorically stomping on the heart of their ex.

Bird TLC has reported that this fundraiser has rapidly become one of their most successful initiatives. The organization aims to replicate this success in 2024, particularly appealing to those looking for a lighthearted way to cope with past relationships. Two ambassador birds, named Culuck and Ghost, will be on hand during the event to engage with participants and make the experience memorable.

The event highlights the intersection of humor and charity, allowing individuals to channel their feelings of heartbreak into support for avian welfare. By participating in this fundraiser, donors contribute not only to the care of injured birds but also engage in a unique cultural moment that resonates with many.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, the Love Hurts fundraiser serves as a reminder that even in moments of heartbreak, there can be opportunities for laughter and community support. Bird TLC encourages anyone interested to participate, ensuring that while the rats may symbolize past loves, the focus remains on healing and helping others.
