Austin Salvation Army Launches National Food Share Month Campaign

March is recognized as National Food Share Month, and the Austin Salvation Army is set to play a pivotal role in this year’s initiative. In partnership with the Greater Minneapolis Community Connections (GMCC), the organization aims to mobilize support from local community members and businesses to bolster the Austin Food Shelf.

The Austin Food Shelf will actively engage with various stakeholders, including civic groups, faith organizations, and media outlets, to raise both food and monetary donations. All contributions will directly benefit the Austin Food Shelf, which has seen a significant increase in demand due to rising costs of food and shelter. The GMCC will enhance local fundraising efforts by matching a portion of the donations, calculated based on previous contributions and the volume of food distributed over the past year. This means that the more support the community provides, the greater the financial assistance the GMCC will offer.

Stacy Wise, a representative from the Austin Salvation Army, emphasized the importance of this annual event, stating, “The community’s support is crucial in keeping our food shelf stocked.” Currently, the Austin Food Shelf assists an average of 1,000 households per month, representing a notable increase of 37.5% over the last two years.

Individuals wishing to contribute can send checks made out to the Salvation Army Food Shelf or drop off food donations at the Austin Salvation Army located at 409 1st Ave NE, Austin, MN 55912. In addition, several local businesses and organizations are also accepting donations, including:

– Mayo Clinic
– Austin Utilities
– Accentra Credit Union
– Mower County Employees Credit Union
– Crane Chapel
– Our Saviors Lutheran Church
– First Congregational Church
– Grace Lutheran Church
– St John Lutheran Church
– CRC
– Morning Lions
– Bremer Bank
– Hormel Corporate/Plant/R&D

The food shelf is particularly seeking donations of canned and dry beans, canned vegetables and fruits, cereal, rice, pasta, and canned meats.

The campaign runs from March 1 to April 6, 2024, and the urgency of this initiative cannot be overstated, given the increasing reliance on food assistance in the Austin area.
