Bridgeport Elks Lodge 714 Marks 125 Years of Community Service

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Bridgeport Lodge 714 is set to celebrate its 125th anniversary on March 28, 2026. Originally chartered in 1901 as the Norristown Elks, the lodge has undergone significant changes over the years, including a relocation to Bridgeport and a reduction in membership, but it remains a vital part of the community.

The lodge was initially established at the intersection of Main and Swede Streets in Norristown. After several years, the organization moved to a new building on 222 Haws Avenue. At its peak, the lodge boasted a membership of around 2,000 and even had its own concert band. By the mid-1990s, the Elks relocated to Bridgeport, where they currently have over 400 members.

The Elks is one of the largest fraternal organizations in the United States, comprising more than 1,900 lodges and nearly 800,000 members nationwide. Notable members throughout history include former U.S. Presidents such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and George H. Bush, as well as entertainment icons like Clint Eastwood and Buffalo Bill Cody.

The Elks have a rich history of service, particularly during the world wars. Around 70,000 Elks served in World War I, with approximately 1,000 making the ultimate sacrifice. During World War II, the number of Elks who served rose to 100,000, and 1,600 lost their lives in combat.

Guided by the principles of charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity, the Elks’ mission emphasizes community service and patriotism. Their motto, “Elks Care, Elks Share,” reflects their commitment to initiatives such as food drives, scholarships, drug awareness programs, and support for veterans. They also organize national events aimed at youth, including the Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot.

The anniversary celebration will take place at the Alloy in King of Prussia, where current Exalted Ruler Troy Schantz will oversee the festivities. Dan Simons is set to succeed Schantz in April, ensuring continued leadership for the lodge.
