Community Legal Aid Launches Housing Assistance Project in North Adams

Community Legal Aid has initiated the North County Housing Legal Assistance Project, a new initiative aimed at providing specialized housing support for residents in recovery from substance use disorders. The project officially launched on December 1, 2025, and seeks to enhance existing legal services in the North Adams area, located in the northern Berkshire region of Massachusetts.

The primary objective of this project is to assist individuals with a history of substance use disorder in securing stable housing. By focusing on the challenges faced by these residents, the initiative aims to combat illegal housing discrimination and offer stabilization for those experiencing housing insecurity. This includes providing legal assistance for sealing and expunging criminal records, which often act as barriers to housing opportunities.

With funding sourced from the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, Northern Berkshire HEAL Coalition, and Berkshire Health Systems, the project is part of a broader effort to address the impacts of opioid overdoses and related issues stemming from substance use in the community. According to the organizations involved, this funding underscores their commitment to reducing the harms associated with substance use while promoting recovery through stable housing solutions.

In addition to legal assistance, the North County Housing Legal Assistance Project will also focus on educational outreach. This outreach will target local residents and community organizations, aiming to raise awareness about housing rights and available resources. By informing individuals about their rights and the legal avenues available to them, the project aspires to empower residents to advocate for themselves in housing matters.

The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the intersection between housing instability and substance use recovery. By addressing these issues concurrently, Community Legal Aid hopes to support individuals in their journey towards long-term recovery and stability.

As the project progresses, stakeholders will monitor its impact on the community, particularly in terms of reducing housing discrimination and improving overall housing security for those in recovery. The collaborative efforts among local organizations highlight a community-focused approach to tackling the complex challenges associated with substance use and homelessness.
