Community Mourns the Loss of John Emmons, 83, of Gorham

John Emmons, a beloved member of the Gorham community, passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on January 14, 1943, in Adrian, Michigan, he was the son of the late Carl and Pearl (Smith) Emmons. Emmons was known for his dedication to family, faith, and service, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.

After graduating from Sand Creek High School in 1961, John pursued an accounting degree at Stautzenberger College in Toledo, Ohio, which he completed in 1965. On October 4, 1963, he married his lifelong partner, Cheri Kay Sullins, in Weston, Michigan. Their marriage spanned over 63 years, during which they built a life filled with love and mutual support.

John had a distinguished career at Taylor Freezer of Michigan, where he dedicated 28 years of service, including 15 years as a partner. His colleagues admired him for his strong work ethic and unwavering integrity. He was a staunch supporter of his community, actively participating in Galilee Baptist Church in Gorham, where he was known for his deep faith and commitment to service.

In retirement, John continued to impact the community through his volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and the Gorham House Memory Care. He also held several board member positions, including Treasurer, demonstrating his willingness to share his time and talents generously.

John was an avid sports fan, particularly loyal to the Detroit Lions and Tigers. His love for golf was well-known, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a devoted grandfather to seven grandchildren: Isabella (Shaine) Goodwin, Aidan Emmons, Bennett Fogg, John (Hailey) Emmons, Alden Griffiths, Harrison Griffiths, and Eva Babler. He also had two great-grandchildren, Adeline and Emery Goodwin.

John is survived by his wife, Cheri Emmons; children Warren (Sarah) Emmons of Seattle, Washington, Kathy (Adam) Griffiths of Scarborough, Maine, and Aaron Emmons of Monroe, Washington; and his siblings Mary Helen Love, Janet Bennett, and Norman Emmons. He was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Donald Emmons.

The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Avita of Stroudwater and Compassus Hospice for their compassionate care during John’s final days. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, servant’s heart, and profound love for his family.

A spring memorial service will be held in Gorham, Maine, with a summer celebration of life planned in Michigan. Further details will be shared at a later date. Those wishing to express their condolences can visit Dolby Blais Segee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in memory of John Emmons to Camp Selah, located at 3600 Long Lake Road, Reading, MI 49274, or through their website at Camp Selah.
