Community Mourns the Passing of Ruby Carole Bare Britt Hayes

Ruby Carole Bare Britt Hayes, a beloved figure in her community, passed away on November 22, 2025, at Johnson City Medical Center. Born on April 17, 1937, in Ashe County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Arvil and Myrtle Phyllis Bare. Her passing has left a profound impact on her family, friends, and the many lives she touched throughout her 88 years.

Ruby was predeceased by her parents, her older brother, Clay Delano Bare, and her son, Daniel Britt. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Dr. Steven Hayes, and her daughter, Cythina (Marty) Ferguson, along with granddaughters Reese and Bennett Ferguson and grandson Jeb Britt. Additionally, she is remembered by stepdaughter Stephanie Richards (Ken) of Bloomington, Indiana, and Michelle McSwain of Hickory, North Carolina, along with other family members and friends.

A Life of Service and Community Engagement

Ruby graduated from Elizabethton High School and began her career as a medical laboratory technician at Carter County Hospital. She later trained as an X-ray technician, dedicating her skills to several urgent care facilities in the Tri-Cities and Greeneville areas. Her professional contributions were matched by her personal qualities; Ruby was known for her kind spirit and warm smile.

An active member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton for over 60 years, Ruby participated in the church choir and worked with preschool children. Her engagement extended beyond the church, as she enjoyed hiking, traveling, and flower gardening, creating lasting memories with friends and family throughout her life.

Ruby was not only an accomplished homemaker but also a talented cook and seamstress, known for crafting Halloween costumes and high-quality clothing. Her generosity and creativity were widely recognized, and she was cherished by those who knew her.

Celebration of Life and Tributes

A celebration of Ruby’s life is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton. The service will be officiated by Reverend Mark McFadden and Reverend Raymond Amos Sr. Musical tributes will be provided by Mrs. Debbie Gouge, Mr. David Arney, and Mrs. Susan Heaton. Family and friends are invited to visit the church from 12 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Following the service, a graveside ceremony will take place at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be chosen from family and friends, while honorary pallbearers will include John Britt, David Kelly, and Terry Bare.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Ruby’s memory to the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton or the American Cancer Society.
