Homeowner Lights Up Stilwell with Unique Bow and Arrow Method

A remarkable holiday light display has transformed a home in Stilwell, Kansas, where homeowner Tom Barnett has installed more than 4,000 lights. Over the past twelve years, Barnett has meticulously crafted this dazzling showcase, employing a distinctive method that involves using a bow and arrow to set up the lights.

Each year, Barnett aims to create a fresh experience for viewers. “I change it up each year to do something different just so that everybody can smile when they drive by the house,” he stated. His efforts have not only brought joy to passersby but have also inspired his neighbors to engage in their own festive displays.

Innovative Techniques Enhance the Display

Barnett’s unique approach to holiday decorating stems from an idea he learned from a friend in Mission Hills. “I watched him shoot a potato gun … and I thought, ‘We can do that,'” Barnett recalled. However, he adapted this concept for his own use, stating, “A bow and arrow comes in really handy.” This innovative method involves shooting an arrow over a tree branch with a fishing line attached. Once the arrow lands, he ties it to a rope or string, allowing him to secure the lights with ease.

The preparation for this intricate display begins as early as September. Barnett dedicates time throughout October and into November to ensure everything is ready for the holiday season. “This is really fun,” he expressed. “I get a lot of joy out of doing this. It’s just something to do to make people smile.”

Community Impact and Inspiration

Beyond his own home, Barnett’s enthusiasm for holiday lights has extended to the local community. He has collaborated with the Arboretum, helping to enhance their seasonal decorations. His commitment to spreading cheer during the festive season has made a significant impact, illustrating how personal creativity can foster community spirit.

As the holiday season approaches, Barnett’s light display has become a beloved tradition in Stilwell, drawing attention and admiration from both locals and visitors. Through his inventive use of a bow and arrow and his dedication to joyful decoration, Tom Barnett has succeeded in creating a spectacle that resonates with the festive spirit.
