Legionaries of Christ Appoints Father Carlos Gutiérrez as New Leader

The Legionaries of Christ has elected Father Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez as its new director general for the 2026–2032 term. This decision was made during the congregation’s general chapter, which commenced on January 20, 2026, in Rome. Father Gutiérrez succeeds Father John Connor, marking a significant leadership transition within the religious organization founded in Mexico.

Born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Father Gutiérrez, 51, has been with the Legionaries since 1999 and was ordained as a priest in 2009. His diverse pastoral experience spans several countries, including Chile, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. Most recently, he served as the territorial director for the northern region of Mexico.

Father Gutiérrez holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum and a bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering from the Monterrey Institute of Technology. He also earned a master’s degree in psychology from Divine Mercy University in Virginia. His extensive roles within the congregation include youth ministry and various leadership positions, reflecting a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s mission.

Commitment to Renewal and Transparency

In a statement regarding the election, the congregation emphasized that Father Gutiérrez is entrusted with the mission of “continuing the path of renewal” that has been pursued for years under the Church’s guidance. The focus will be on promoting evangelization and serving communities, particularly those on the existential peripheries. The statement further highlighted an ongoing commitment to creating an institutional culture characterized by transparency, care, and service to all.

The general chapter, which includes 60 priests from 13 countries, is also set to elect general councilors and a general administrator. They will engage in discussions about various aspects of the Legionaries of Christ’s life and mission.

Background on the Legionaries and Regnum Christi

Founded in 1941, the Legionaries of Christ is a religious congregation of pontifical right. Presently, it comprises two bishops, 1,033 priests, and 273 religious and novices worldwide. The organization is part of the Regnum Christi spiritual family, which has undergone substantial reform in response to historical issues, including cases of sexual abuse and power misuse involving its founder, Marcial Maciel.

In February 2025, the new statutes of the Regnum Christi Federation were definitively approved, establishing it as a “spiritual family and apostolic body” with multiple vocations, including Legionaries of Christ, consecrated laymen, consecrated women, and lay members. These groups share a common charism, spirituality, and mission.

Simultaneously with the general chapter of the Legionaries of Christ, the general assembly of the consecrated women of Regnum Christi is taking place in Rome, where Nancy Nohrden was re-elected as director general. The assembly of consecrated laymen is also convening, with new leadership expected to be elected shortly.

On January 28, 2026, Pope Leo XIV received the participants of these meetings, encouraging them to clarify their identity. He expressed confidence that a clearer understanding of their vocation would enhance their ability to proclaim the Gospel effectively.

The election of Father Gutiérrez marks a pivotal moment for the Legionaries of Christ as it continues its journey of renewal and dedication to service in a changing world.
