Man Brightens Holiday Season with Father’s Christmas Legacy

Timothy Newsome has taken on the cherished holiday tradition of decorating his yard in memory of his late father, Eddie JLP Newsome. This year, Newsome aims to recreate the festive spirit his father instilled in their community, transforming his home at 2709 Arthur St. in Westlake into a dazzling display reminiscent of the elaborate setups his father created for decades.

The holiday decoration effort, which Newsome affectionately calls “Newsome’s Old Fashioned Christmas Lights,” has become a labor of love. After losing his father on May 5, 2024, Timothy felt a wave of nostalgia and melancholy as he took on the responsibility that had once belonged to Eddie. “My dad started this tradition many years before I was born,” Newsome recalled. “He first began decorating at the end of Patin Road in Westlake and later moved to our current location where I grew up.”

Eddie Newsome was known for his passion for Christmas, amassing a collection of over 300 plastic figurines throughout the years. His yard was a spectacle, drawing visitors from near and far who came to admire the lights and decorations. “We even had people drive in from Texas each year to see it,” Timothy said.

As a child, Timothy was thrilled to assist his father alongside his five siblings in bringing the decorations to life. Even as an adult, he continued this tradition, ensuring the family legacy endured. “Even in his last Christmas with us, Dad was outside helping me decorate my yard,” he noted.

Setting up the display is no small feat. Newsome estimates that it takes approximately two weeks to complete the intricate arrangement. This year’s setup includes an impressive 8,080 light bulbs, 256 stake nails, 253 plastic figurines, and numerous other decorations, reflecting the effort and dedication he pours into the project.

In addition to the classic elements, Timothy has introduced new features to the display. “We’ve added little cutouts for people to take pictures with their faces popping through, with the lights in the backdrop,” he explained. He has also incorporated wooden nutcrackers made by students from local schools, demonstrating his commitment to community involvement.

Timothy honors his father’s memory by keeping an empty chair outside, symbolizing the bond they shared. “I know he’s still there with me. This was something that was so special between me and my dad that I want to continue it for the next generation,” he said. The joy and nostalgia tied to their annual displays have always been a significant part of the holiday season for the family.

His neighbors have embraced the spirit of the season as well, collaborating with Timothy to enhance the festive atmosphere. “My neighbors are awesome and work well with me on the lights. They even let me extend my display a bit into their yards,” he said. The sense of community and shared joy contributes to the magic of the holiday celebration.

Timothy Newsome believes that the decorations evoke cherished memories, not only for him but for many in the community. “I hope passers-by enjoy them as much as my father and I have all these years,” he stated. His commitment to keeping his father’s legacy alive through the holiday lights serves as a beacon of joy and remembrance during this festive season.
