In a remarkable demonstration of community spirit, nonprofits in Oakland have collaborated with at-risk youth to prepare Thanksgiving meals for 900 families in need. The initiative, organized by the East Oakland Bridges Coalition, aims to ensure that every family can enjoy a festive meal during the holiday season.
The coalition, comprising various local nonprofits, gathered volunteers and resources to facilitate a holiday food giveaway. This effort not only aims to feed families but also provides a sense of purpose and healing for the young volunteers involved. “Being able to help other people makes my inner child heal because I wasn’t able to get that help when I was younger,” shared Crystal Zavala, a high school student who is actively participating in the food preparation.
The project features the assembly of boxes filled with traditional Thanksgiving fixings, which will be distributed to families in need across the community. Volunteers like Zamiah Nobles, a 25-year-old who has faced her own challenges, express a desire to reshape perceptions of Oakland. “I just want Oakland to be better than what others look at it as. It’s not just always robberies, stealing, killing,” she stated, reflecting the transformative potential of community support.
For many of the young volunteers, this initiative represents a significant shift from past behaviors. Kenneth McClendon, a 15-year-old volunteer, described his former life marked by crime. He credits guidance from local nonprofits run by individuals with similar pasts. “I was one of the ones who helped destroy and destruct Oakland. My thing is to give back and help repair it,” explained Charles Reed, founder of Lifers Leaving a Legacy, an organization focused on rehabilitation and community service.
The challenges facing at-risk youth in Oakland are substantial, as highlighted by Ziri Wilson, CEO of Lulu’s House. “It’s hard out here for these youngsters because nobody believes in them. But we do,” he emphasized, underscoring the critical support these organizations provide in helping young people set and achieve their goals.
On Saturday, November 25, 2023, the coalition will distribute the meal boxes to families throughout the community. This Thanksgiving effort is part of a broader commitment, with plans to host a similar food drive for Christmas.
The young participants expressed that their involvement not only benefits those receiving the meals but offers them a profound sense of fulfillment. They recognize that their contributions can reshape their narratives and positively impact their community.
As the holiday season approaches, the actions of these nonprofits and their volunteers highlight the importance of community engagement and support, demonstrating that collective efforts can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.
