The city of San Marcos has initiated the “Help Keep the Lights On” campaign, aimed at assisting residents in maintaining their utility services during the holiday season. Launched on December 2, 2023, coinciding with GivingTuesday, the campaign invites community members to contribute to the San Marcos Utility Payment Assistance Program. Donations will be accepted for a week, providing critical support to qualifying residents struggling to meet their utility bills.
Through this initiative, residents with at least one SMTX Utilities account can receive assistance. The program also extends to residents who may be serviced by other utility providers, including Centerpoint Energy, Pedernales Electric, and Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative. Contributions can be made via the city’s Customer Connect portal or directly on utility bills by selecting the donation option and specifying the desired amount.
Community Support and Additional Initiatives
The campaign not only seeks to prevent service interruptions but also highlights the spirit of community support during a season focused on generosity. According to the city’s official website, more information about the donation process is accessible at tinyurl.com/citydonations. This link also outlines other city-led initiatives requiring support, including the Memorial or Honor Book Donation for the San Marcos Public Library, pet supplies for the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, and the Blue Santa 2025 program organized by the San Marcos Police Department.
Additionally, the city is running a Summer Fan Drive and Winter Heater Drive through SMTX Utilities, alongside opportunities for program sponsorship via the Parks and Recreation Department. The city encourages all residents to participate in these efforts to foster a sense of unity and assist those in need.
Founded in 2012, GivingTuesday is recognized as a “global generosity movement,” motivating individuals worldwide to engage in acts of kindness. San Marcos’ campaign is a reflection of this ethos, reinforcing the importance of community collaboration during the holiday season.
